SharpEye™ is a digital radar technology which is available both in X and S band frequencies. It is a radical and innovative departure from current marine navigation radar technology in that it has no magnetron and uses a coherent transmission, which means that SharpEye™ is able to separate targets from clutter due to their differing radial velocity components. This extra dimension gives a significant performance advantage in detecting small targets in clutter resulting in safer ship operations.
SharpEye™ uses a solid-state power amplifier has a peak output power of just 170W and a duty of 10%. This contrasts with conventional magnetron based marine navigation radar systems, which have a 30kW output and duty typically less than 0.05%.
SharpEye™ transmits relatively long pulses in order to illuminate targets with sufficient energy for detection. To provide the required short range performance, SharpEye™ transmits a patented sequence of pulses of differing length, with each pulse optimised to cover a specified but overlapping range scale.
The graphs below compare the performance of conventional magnetron radar with that of SharpEye™, the performance advantage can be clearly seen. With no magnetron to routinely change, a 5 year warranty and exceptional performance, SharpEye™ has to be the world’s best radar.
For over 60 years, Kelvin Hughes has been supplying Radar to the commercial shipping fleet. The latest product is MantaDigital™, which provides the navigator with the ultimate in functionality, safety and reliability. MantaDigital™ combined with the solid-state SharpEye™ Radar gives the ultimate in low life cost combined with superior functionality and performance.
Designed for ease of operation MantaDigital™ is the latest product from Kelvin Hughes' Manta development programme. This new generation multi function radar system exceeds the 2008 IMO performance requirements and is the ideal partner to the solid-state SharpEye™ radar.
MantaDigital™ is driven by Kelvin Hughes' "common-core" processor system which is now in use throughout the radar, ECDIS and VDR product ranges providing enhanced functionality, reliability and low cost of ownership.
MantaDigital™ is available in a variety of forms to meet the needs of different vessel types and operational scenarios. It can be supplied in options ranging from a single 22" Desktop retrofit system through to a fully inter-switched bridge system with up to six radar sensors and displays.
Display options include 22" and 26" screens, pedestal, desktop and mounting into consoles. The transmitter options include 10kW and 25kW X band and 30kW S band magnetron systems and both S and X band SharpEye™ solid-state solutions.
Kelvin Hughes’ "Enhanced Target Detection" (ETD) significantly enhances the display of slow-moving or stationary targets without interfering with the normal radar appearance or operation.
ETD, the latest innovation in the MantaDigital™ range treats stationary and moving returns differently, highlighting the moving ones by displaying them in a different colour. ETD combined with the dual PPI mode provided by MantaDigital™ enables the operator to continue using the radar in the normal way with the addition of a simultaneous advanced detection view available on the secondary PPI without cluttering the main display. ETD can be viewed in either the main or secondary radar window.
The navigator’s comments from an Antarctic survey vessel were as follows: “The ETD feature has been put to good use this season. It is a very effective feature in the ice and is used regularly. It is particularly good at defining ice edges which can be useful when looking for leads in the ice. The screen shots above show ETD in action on our X band radar.
The ETD really does come into its own when operating in restricted visibility. Icebergs can often be identified within pack ice because of the radar shadow they show behind them, the ETD shows this effect well.
The radar overlay on the ECDIS works well and has been very useful for plotting the coastline.”
